Half The World Global Literati Award 2016
General Competition Rules

Half the World Holdings, its subsidiaries, affiliated companies (the “Organizer”) and its parent, Blackrun Ventures, Ltd. will conduct Half the World Global Literati Award Competition (the “Competition”) as described in these contesting rules, and by participating, each entrant agrees as follows:


  1. The Competition is open to all individual persons aged 13 or older, except employees of Blackrun Ventures, Half the World Holdings and their associated, affiliated or subsidiary companies, their families, agents or any other person(s) connected with the competition, including third party partners.
  2. The Competition closes at 11:59:59pm of 8 June 2016, US Eastern Daylight Time (the “Closing Date”).
  3. A single Entrant may submit up to five (5) different entries.
  4. An entry cannot be withdrawn once uploaded to the HTW Literati Award.
  5. The Entrant shall pay an entry fee of US$20 per submission.
  6. An Entrant must enter on his/her own behalf and must submit his/her entry in the form requested by the Organizer and include his/her name, address and e-mail address.
  7. To enter the Competition, the Entrant must complete the online form at HTW Literati Award and submit it before the Closing Date. The following fields in the form are mandatory and must be completed: name, home address, email address, entry category, synopsis (including characters’ descriptions and relationships) that does not exceed 300 words and must not contain personal details of the author, plus manuscript. Entries must not be handwritten and must be in English. Entries must be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format. An entry will be considered complete only upon receipt of the uploaded synopsis and full manuscript.
  8. The Organizer reserves the right to allocate the entry into a different category at the Organizer’s discretion. Entrants are responsible for completing the submission process correctly and alerting the Organizer to any problems they encounter. The Organizer and Blackrun Ventures accept no liability for submissions not received due to a failure on the Entrant’s part to follow the online instructions correctly. Entrants must be contactable at the email address they provide at the time of submission and judging.
  9. The Organizer will not be liable for technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind or lost or unavailable network connections that may limit or prohibit an eligible entrant’s ability to participate in the competition. Other than death or personal injury arising from the acts or omissions of the Organizer or its employees, the Organizer will not be liable for any loss or damage arising out of the winner’s enjoyment of the prize.
  10. All personal data provided to the Organizer in the course of The Competition is subject to the privacy policy found on the HTW Literati Award. Entrants’ names may be published on the Website.


  1. Entries must be the original work of the Entrant. If the entry was created with a co-author, the Entrant must identify the co-author.
  2. Entries must not have previously been published in print or online or through broadcast. Entries also must not have been the recipient of a prize or recognition in any other competition.
  3. By submitting an entry, the Entrant represents and warrants that his/her submission (i) is his/her own original content and does not infringe on any other copyright and (ii) is not defamatory, obscene, or illegal. The entrant agrees to indemnify the Organizer against any liability and damages resulting from the Organizer's reliance on Entrant's representations and warranties, including any incurred attorneys’ fees and costs.
  4. Entries must be the original work of the Entrant. If the entry was created with a co-author, the Entrant must identify the co-author.


  1. The judging criteria and apportionment are:

    Originality/Concept 20%
    Structure/Plot & Pacing 20%
    Characters & Dialogue 20%
    Theme 10%
    Style/Tone 10%
    Commercial Potential 20%


  1. All valid entries received before the Closing Date will be reviewed by a sub-panel of judges who will be using the Judging Criteria (set out above) to create a short-list of entries from each of the four categories. If there are less than ten entries in an individual category, the judges may, at their discretion, select entries from across the other categories to make up the shortfall.
  2. The main judging panel will then select one winner from the short-listed entrants. Shortlisted entrants will not win any prizes.
  3. The judges’ decision is final and binding on the entrants. No correspondence will be entered into.
  4. The winning entrant will be notified during the week commencing 15 July, 2016.
  5. If the winning entrant cannot be contacted or is not available, the Organizer reserves the right to select another winner from the entries shortlisted before the closing date/time. The winning entrant will be notified by email he/she provided at the time of registration. The winning entrant will also be notified via a posting on the HTW Literati Award website.
  6. Shortlisted entrants may be offered contracts for further collaborations with the Organizer and/or Blackrun Ventures or may be invited to be featured on Chapterly, a pay-per-view e-Bookstore with crowdsourced and published content owned by Blackrun Ventures.


  1. As set out in Section I Clause 8, there are 3 categories, namely:
    • Short Story (7,500 words or less)
    • Novella (17,500 to 40,000 words)/Novel (40,000 words or more)
    • Screenplay (For a movie or an episode of a TV series)
  2. Genres accepted into the competition are:
    • Romance / Drama
    • Fantasy / Sci-fi
    • Mystery / Thriller / Crime
    • Memoir / Biography / History
    • Erotic
    • Humor / Satire
    • Horror
    • Literary Fiction
  3. Prize Money

    1. The winning entrant will win a US$50,000 (U.S. dollars fifty thousand) prize.
    2. If the winning entrant cannot be contacted or is disqualified for any reason, the Organizer reserves the right to determine an alternate winner or not to award that winner’s prize, in its sole discretion.
    3. The winning entrant is responsible for ensuring he/she is able to accept the prize as set out and in accordance with these terms and conditions, in the event they are unable to do so then the Organizer reserves the right to withdraw the prize.
    4. The value of the prize may be reported for tax purposes as required by law.  The winning entrant is solely responsible for reporting and paying any and all applicable taxes related to the prize and paying any expenses associated with any prize. The winner must provide the Organizer with valid identification and a valid taxpayer identification number or social security number or similar required number before any prize will be awarded.


  1. Entrants will retain copyright in their submitted entries, however, by entering the Competition, all entrants grant the Organizer, Blackrun Ventures and Half the World Holdings a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual license to edit, publish and use parts of each entry in any and all media (including, but not limited to, television, radio, print, and online) for publicity and news purposes.
  2. The Organizer reserves the right to publish excerpts of entries, but is under no obligation to do so. Publication does not necessarily mean the entrant has won a prize.
  3. By entering the Competition, the winning entrant agrees to grant the Organizer an exclusive license in return for royalties, with a minumum annual royalty to be paid in the maintenance of said exclusivity, to be determined after the winning entrant is announced and to be negotiated in good faith by the Organizer and winning entrant.
  4. By entering the Competition, the winning entrant agrees to participate in reasonable publicity relating to the Award, including but not limited to having his/her name published with their entry.
  5. By entering the Competition, the winning entrant further agrees to allow the free use of his/her name, photographs and general locations for publicity and news purposes during this and future promotions by the Organizer, Blackrun Ventures or Half the World Holdings or any associated or subsidiary company of Blackrun Ventures or Half the World Holdings.


  1. Completion and submission of the online registration form will be deemed acceptance of each and every rule, term and, condition set forth in this and the proceeding sections. The Organizer reserves the right, with or without cause, to exclude entrants and withhold prizes for violating any of these rules, terms, and conditions.
  2. Misrepresentative or fraudulent entries will invalidate the entrant.
  3. Offering or receiving any incentive for voting is not permitted and will invalidate the vote, and may disqualify the recipient of the vote.
  4. Entry fee is US$20 per submission.
  5. The Organizer reserves the right to amend these rules, terms, and conditions at any time. Any amendments will be published on the HTW Literati Award.
  6. There is no alternative to the prize stated. The prize is not transferable and no part or parts of the prize may be substituted for other benefits, items or additions.
  7. The Organizer reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify or supersede the Competition (including altering the prize) if, in its sole discretion, the Competition is not capable of being conducted as specified. The Organizer reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal value in the event that circumstances beyond their control make this unavoidable.
  8. The laws of Singapore govern the Competition.
